WE Soda Ltd, the world's largest producer of natural soda ash, is pleased to announce that Intertek, a leading global Total Quality Assurance provider has issued WE Soda with the first independent certification of carbon emissions intensity for soda ash and sodium bicarbonate, under its Carbon ClearTM programme.

Highlights

·       CarbonClearTM Kazan Soda: 0.261 metric tonne (“mt”) of CO2e per mt of bulk soda ash

·       CarbonClearTM Eti Soda: 0.291 mt of CO2e per mt of bulk soda ash

·       EU average: 0.932 mt of CO2e per mt of bulk soda ash

CarbonClearTM certification is designed to drive transparency, precision, and assurance of carbon emissions performance, while also serving as a catalyst for accelerating investment and performance in carbon emissions reduction.

Launched in 2020, Intertek's CarbonClearTM is the world's first certification programme that independently verifies the carbon intensity per unit of a commodity. The certification enables each part of the downstream value chain to confidently rely on certified and standardised emissions intensities, to more easily compare the impact of a chosen commodity on emission reduction targets and performance.

Dr. Alan Knight, OBE, Chief Sustainability Officer of WE Soda, said:

"Soda ash plays an important role in the production of many essential every-day goods and in the energy transition. We believe that the way in which soda ash is produced will become increasingly important, as customers look for effective ways to decarbonise their value chains and consumers become increasingly focused on the sustainability characteristics of the products they purchase.

“With WE Soda’s clear sustainability advantage and low CO2e soda ash, mainly driven by our production method, we felt it was important to provide our customers with independent certification of the emissions intensity per unit of our product. Through CarbonClearTM, we have created a clear, transparent and reliable digital footprint of the carbon intensity per metric tonne of our soda ash. We believe this is an important step forward in our industry and, overtime, this will enable our customers to make more informed choices when it comes to the sustainability characteristics of their raw materials.”

1 Based on Life Cycle Analysis methodology for CO2e emissions intensity of a product on a per mt of bulk soda ash. The 2023 reported CO2e intensity for WE Soda of 0.334 mt of CO2e per mt of soda ash is based on a GHG protocol calculation for the combined production facility emissions from Eti Soda and Kazan Soda, which includes other operating emissions.

2 European Commission – Electorate General – Climate Action from their ‘Update of benchmark values for the years 2021 – 2025 of phase 4 of the EU ETS’ covering average GHG emissions intensity of all EU installations 2016/2017, https://climate.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2021-10/policy_ets_allowances_bm_curve_factsheets_en.pdf. The most relevant comparator to Carbon ClearTM although isn’t as comprehensive and doesn’t include cradle to gate CO2e emissions data.
